Zomick's to Remain and Expand in the Town of Hempstead
"Aficionados of fine kosher baked goods will rejoice in the knowledge that Zomicks Bakery will continue to produce its mouth-watering wares locally - with an assist from the Town of Hempstead", according to Town Supervisor Kate Murray.
Zomick's, which operates two well-known bakeries, Steinberg's Bake Shop in Oceanside and Zomick's Kosher Kafe and Bake Shop in Cedarhurst, was "suffering" from success in its wholesale bake operations. With an urgent need to expand, it faced the prospect of moving out of town unless a suitable, financially viable site could be found.
Teaming up with the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency (IDA), Zomick's was finally able to locate a 28,000 square foot building in Inwood which met its needs. With the IDA conferring tax and fee exemptions in its quest to retain this longtime business, Zomick's will be able to shift its production operations to the new location at 85 Inip Drive, Inwood.
"For years, local residents have been lining up to buy Zomick's kosher baked goods, including danishes, breads, pastries, cookies and cake," Murray noted. The company's reputation spread far and wide as its wholesale operations struggled to keep up with orders from throughout the tri-state region and, more recently, from supermarkets and gourmet stores in the Mid-Atlantic States.
Morris Kaff, who heads Zomicks, told the town IDA, "We must move. We have no choice. We now are turning away a tremendous amount of business and our cramped operations are hurting our competitive position." Fortunately, the professionals at Hempstead Town's IDA were able to accommodate Zomick's need to grow while making it possible for the business to remain in America's largest township.
Fred Parola, the IDA executive director, said Zomick's has indicated it will spend $4.4 million to purchase and renovate the building and to equip it with a full array of bakery production equipment, such as ovens, mixers and freezers. Employment will jump from the present 28 to 43.
